For example, an impact assessment might evaluate whether an AI hiring tool could unfairly disadvantage certain demographic groups, or how an AI-driven product recommendation system might affect consumer behavior and privacy.
  • When to conduct: Perform impact assessments periodically (e.g. annually or at major project milestones) and whenever significant changes occur. A “significant change” could be a major update to the AI model, a new feature, a change in the AI’s purpose or user base, or deployment in a new region or context. Essentially, if a change could alter the AI’s impact or risk profile, an impact assessment should be revisited.
  • Documenting results: As with the previous subclauses, the organization must retain documented information of all impact assessments. According to ISO 42001’s guidance, you should define a process for assessing AI’s potential consequences on individuals, groups, or society, considering the technical and societal context and the jurisdictions involved. A typical impact assessment process may include steps such as:
    1. Define the scope – Clearly outline which AI system or project is being assessed, its intended purpose, and scope of use (including stakeholders, data, and context).
    2. Collect system information – Gather details about how the AI system works (algorithms, data sources, model training process, decision logic) and its deployment context.
    3. Identify sensitive use cases or thresholds – Determine what aspects of the AI’s use are sensitive or high-risk (e.g. impacts on human rights, critical decisions like medical or legal, use of personal data, etc.). Establish criteria for what would be considered a significant impact.
    4. Assess potential impacts – Analyze the potential positive and negative impacts on end-users, affected communities, and other stakeholders. Consider categories such as fairness (e.g. risk of bias or discrimination), transparency (is the AI’s operation explainable to those impacted?), privacy (does it handle personal data appropriately?), security and safety (could it cause physical or financial harm), and societal implications (e.g. environmental impact, workforce impact).
